Entries for December, 2007

December

Yesterday was a scary day for travelers. On my way to Chicago, I saw about ten different vehicles sitting on the side of the road; they obviously lost control on the slick ice. I managed to escape unscathed, though I was delayed for about 4 hours. You see, I took shelter at a Subway/McDonalds for a couple of hours before trying to decide if it was safe to go on. My car was stuffed with belongings, plus it was my first time driving in wintry conditions. That wasn't a good combination. Yet here am I, spared from hurt, ready to take on the new job.

I guess I lied; I didn't emerge fully unscathed from the move. I miss someone ...very dearly.

Megan and I celebrated Christmas early again. Won't tell you the full extent of her ingenuity, but she did give me "Story" by Robert McKee. A must read, I've heard.

Zipped

My blog topics may likely change in the future as I'm not utterly free to broadcast my daily happenings. I foresee more internal-experiential blog content and less activity-related blogs.  When I was hired I agreed not to "divulge company secrets" but not knowing what is or what isn't a secret - sort of puts me in a bind. Naturally I'm going to avoid mentioning the workplace on the internet altogether - just so I can continue receiving a paycheck. I'm sure you understand.

Not totally dismissing activity-related entries though! Certainly I do more than just work while in the waking state.

Linkables

Being a better blogger means so much more than posting content consistently. What makes the blog universe unique is readers connecting other readers to good content. Especially since it's impossible to come up with good original content on a regular basis. So in an effort to be a better blogger, here are some links I recommend:

The $100 laptop project for kids in developing nations. 'Give one get one' until December 31st. Here.

The Google 2007 Zeitgeist. Are you attuned to culture? Here.

And just so I can make this list a trio. The Rule of Threes. Here.

Abolition of Neatness

I'm starting to see an upsurge of websites which are intentionally cluttered. And it isn't because they're badly designed either. This is the future of the digital universe, as clutter more accurately reflects the complexity of life. I predict we shall begin to see the gradual disintegration of plain, neat, and perfectly categorized digital content. The massive wealth of data constantly being uploaded onto the web now outlaws conventional systems of categorization. Webpages used to be just that: a system of categories. That system works insofar as the links on a page all point inward (as opposed to pointing to outside sources).

But construct a fenced-off site in this age and you'll be in danger of being totally obsolete. A company must draw relevant content from the rest of the internet - there's no getting around it.

For an extreme idea of what I mean by "clutter websites," check out WeFeelFine. (hat-tip: Chris)

I have more thoughts on this but I'll keep it for later. For example: how a user evolves with the tool. As for now, before we fully evolve into clutter-adept creatures, make use of RSS feeds, StumbleUpon, and Squidoo. They are examples of services already recognizing the impending need of web-users to simplify - and making a profit out of it.

In Narnia, Father Christmas brought tools, not toys. What Christmas Meant to C.S.Lewis.
